Postgraduate education is essential to the health and well-being of all higher education institutions as well as a fundamental contributor to the world class skills that the UK needs to maintain its position in the global economy. While the number of postgraduate enrolments and qualifications completed continue to increase, the recent DIUS commissioned reviews of higher education have highlighted the vulnerability of research careers in the UK. To maintain credible and sustainable growth in the face of changing funding streams, demographics and student demands, all universities are challenged to develop strategies to guarantee a sustainable market and responsive student experience. Attendees at this conference heard how higher education institutions are acting now to prepare for these challenges with strategies to improve student recruitment, quality, support and employability to secure the future of the postgraduate sector.
