Peter Cockersell

Peter Cockersell has worked in homelessness for over 20 years: as a clinician, with 15 years’ experience as a psychotherapist, including working for the NHS with homeless people in primary and secondary care and in a central London day centre; and as a service provider, most recently with ten years’ experience as Director of Health & Recovery for St Mungo’s.

Among the many health-related innovations he has been involved in developing and implementing are hostel-based needle exchanges and substitute prescribing, intermediate care, accessible psychotherapy services for homeless people with histories of complex trauma and presentations of polymorbidity, Psychologically Informed Environments (PIEs), hospital discharge services, and palliative care for the homeless.

After leaving St Mungo’s in Sept 2014, Peter currently provides specialised training and consultancy in psychological approaches to tackling homelessness and social exclusion, and is also an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Psychology of University of Surrey.
