Karen began her career working as a nursery nurse in a paediatric unit before qualifying as a social worker and moving to work for South Birmingham Primary Care Trust across a range of family support and child protection services.

Karen then moved to Birmingham City Council in 2002 to develop a Sure Start Local Programme and later obtained her current post as Head of Service for Birmingham City Council, responsible for commissioning, delivery and quality of all Early Years Services.
