Roger Thompson
Roger Thompson, Director of Standards and Registration, Nursing and Midwifery Council
Roger is a registered nurse for people with learning disabilities and has practised in a range of hospital and community settings. He also has wide experience of delivering education programmes in higher education. In 1993 he was programme leader of the first joint nursing and social work degree programme so has a sound record in inter-professional education. Roger has held a number of non-executive director roles in not for profit services and chaired a project with SCOPE on sharing the news of the diagnosis of children’s disabilities.
Roger joined the NMC in 2002 as part of the QA team. He took a lead role the strategic development of the NMC’s UK wide QA Framework. Roger led on the technical aspect of procuring QA services and managed contracts with the NMCs’ external suppliers. Since March ‘09 Roger has been managing the whole of the NMC’s standards portfolio for nursing and has overall responsibility for registration processes. Current work includes revalidation, new pre-registration nursing standards, scoping regulation of advanced practice and healthcare support workers, review of SCPHN, investigation of systemic failure.
