Nigel Leigh

Nigel has been the Principal and Chief Executive of Stephenson College in Coalville, North West Leicestershire since the 1st October 2007. He has worked in colleges in Sunderland, Buxton, Birmingham and Nuneaton in senior roles in curriculum, quality and human resources.

Nigel trained originally as a Teacher and subsequently as a Solicitor and has masters' degrees from the University of Birmingham and the University of Central England. He is currently conducting research into the impact of skills competitions on the self esteem of learners.

The breadth of Nigel’s college experience is added to through work in the private sector and work with the Department for Education exploring partnership models for 14-19 collaboration. His previous experience of collaborative working between colleges, large employers and trades unions has been adopted by Stephenson College with strong union connections being established.

Since arriving at Stephenson College Nigel has become the Further Education representative on the Leicestershire Children and Young People’s Board, he is the Vice Chair of the North West Leicestershire District Council’s Local Strategic Partnership and chairs the Economic Sub Group of the Local Strategic Partnership and the Leicestershire Colleges Principals’ Group.

Nigel is the East Midlands Regional Champion for World Skills and Stephenson College is hosting the UK Squad Selection Event for World Skills 2011 this week.
