Professor Guilford became vice-chancellor of Victoria University in March 2014 having previously been dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Auckland. He is on the board of the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency and is a member of the New Zealand China Council. In 2015, he was presented with the Australasian Green Gown Award for leadership.
