Dr Kjerfve, an expert in coastal and estuarine physical oceanography, served as president of the World Maritime University before taking up his current appointment in July 2014. Between 2004 and 2009, he was the dean of the College of Geosciences and was a professor of oceanography at Texas A&M University in the US.
