Stefan Brown

 Stefan Brown
Stefan Brown studied social work as an undergraduate at Hertfordshire in the early 1990’s. After qualifying he worked as a social worker mainly in mental health services, including working as a social worker in a community mental health team and a mental health rehabilitation team.

In 2000, Stefan worked as a Forensic Mental Health Social Worker in a secure unit in West London. His work mainly consisted of assessment, preparing tribunal reports, giving evidence at tribunals, multi-disciplinary work and preparing service users for re-integration into the community. While in West London he worked as an assistant team manager for a team of social workers.

Stefan studied his Masters in Social Policy and Administration at Brunel in 1999, specialising in comparative Social Policy. He completed ASW in 2002 and worked as a ASW and also an AMHP for a number of years in a West London borough. He also completed the Post graduate award in Social work.

Stefan left practice to work as an academic in 2009 and currently works as a lecturer at Royal Holloway University of London. He teaches on the MSc in Social Work. Specific areas of teaching include social policy – poverty capabilities and exploring health inequalities; Mental health – collaborative practice and understanding capacity and deprivation of liberty and Anti-oppressive practice.

His research interests include Mental capacity and citizenship, understanding mental health of marginalized groups, the Deprivation of Liberty safeguards and early onset dementia. He is currently in the early stages of a PhD looking at capacity and citizenship.
