Previous roles include Policy Manager at the ONE campaign; Research Fellow at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI); and Economist at the Rwandan Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture. Prior to that Karin worked for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Catholic Relief Services in Croatia. Her policy and research specialism include:

- Aid, donor behaviour and aid effectiveness particularly from a recipient country perspective
- National policy and public finance process
- Fragile states, donor country policy coherence
- Growth, agriculture/natural resources and food security (in Africa)
