Speaker Biography

Hugh Thornberry

Hugh is Strategic Director of Children’s Services responsible for Action for Children’s services for children in care across the UK, and the charity’s operations in a large geographic area encompassing London and the South of England.

Action for Children is committed to helping the most vulnerable children and young people in the UK break through injustice, deprivation and inequality, so they can achieve their full potential. The organisation was originally called the National Children’s Home, or NCH, until September 2008 when we changed our name to one that better describes what we do and what we value – Action for Children.

Hugh joined Action for Children in 1997 and has held several senior roles. He previously worked for the Rainer Foundation (now Catch 22) where he managed and developed services in partnership with probation for young people with a history of offending. Before that, he spent 14 years working in children’s services for local authorities.

He is a member of the Compact Voice Board, representing the voluntary and community sector in England to take forward the Compact with the public sector at both national and local government levels and has recently been elected to the newly formed NCVO Member’s Assembly. Hugh has frequently represented Action for Children in government and policy fora, in the media and on conference platforms.
