Peter John is the Hallsworth Chair of Government in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester, where he is Co-director of the Institute for Political and Economic Governance. He is known for his work on local government and public policy and is author of Analysing Public Policy (1998, new edition in 2011) and Local Governance in Western Europe (2001). He is interested in how to involve citizens in public policy and management. He coordinated the Home Office's research programme on civil renewal, 2004/2005, brought together in the edited volume Re-energising Citizenship (2006). With co-funding from Communities and Local Government and the Economic and Social Research Council, he recently directed the project, Resdiscovering the Civic: Achieving Better Outcomes in Public Policy (www.civicbehaviour.org.uk), which carried out a range of projects, including randomized controlled trials, to find out what public agencies can do to involve citizens.
