Maggie O'Brien

Maggie O’Brien, Director of Midwifery, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Maggie qualified, as a midwife, at Worthing in 1979 and has practiced midwifery, in various roles since then.

She was appointed Regional Officer at the Royal College of Midwives in 1995, which involved representing midwives for both employment relations and professional issues at all levels.

In 1997 Maggie was appointed as the Head of Midwifery at the Princess Anne Hospital, Southampton and as Director of Midwifery at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital, London in November 2000. She is currently Director of Midwifery for Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

In May 1997 Maggie was elected as UK member of the Royal College of Midwives Council and was elected President in 2004 until 2008.

She has a particular interest in developing workplace cultures that encourage midwives to realise their full potential and practice as autonomous practitioners.
