Professor Lavie has been at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology since 1975, when he joined the Faculty of Medicine and subsequently founded its Sleep Research Laboratory. Later, he became dean of medicine and then vice-president for resource development and external relations at the institution. He was elected as its president in 2009.
