Professor Joanna Bourke

Joanna Bourke is Professor of History at Birkbeck College, University of London, where she teaches modern British history. She is the prize-winning author of nine books, including histories on rape, modern warfare, military medicine, psychology and psychiatry, and the emotions (particularly fear). Most recently, she published Rape: A History from the 1860s to the Present (Virago, 2007), which has been translated into Italian, Spanish, Czech, Russian, and Greek. An Intimate History of Killing won the Wolfson Prize and the Fraenkel Prize. Her new book, entitled “Are Women Animals?”: Historical Reflections on What It Means To Be Human, 1791 to the Present will be published by Virago in 2011. She is a frequent contributor to TV and radio shows, and a regular correspondent for newspapers.
